Ergo Proxy:
Ergo Proxy (エルゴプラクシー, Erugo Purakushī?) is a science fiction suspense anime television series, produced by Manglobe, which premiered across Japan on 25 February 2006 on the WOWOW satellite network, for a total of 23 episodes. It is directed by Shukou Murase, with screenplay by Dai Satō et al. Ergo Proxy features a combination of 2D digital cell animation, 3D computer modeling and digital special effects. The series has both steampunk and cyberpunk elements and focuses heavily on the psychology and mentality of its protagonists.
Story:
The story begins in a futuristic domed city called Romdo, built to protect its citizens after a global ecological disaster. In this utopia, humans and androids (AutoReivs) coexist with each other peacefully under a total management system. A series of murders committed by berserk robots (infected with the Cogito virus) starts to jeopardize the delicate balance of the social order. Behind the scenes, the government is conducting secret experiments on a mysterious humanoid life form called Proxy, which is believed to hold the key to the survival of mankind.
The Anime on my Mind Blog Describes Ergo Proxy as Follows:
"The best way to describe Ergo Proxy is “CSI meets GitS meets Bladerunner” with only a hawt gothic girl replacing hawt military girl and androgynous android replacing ta-chi-ko-ma-kun. Ril is the hawt gothic girl, and she is a detective for the Citizen Security Bureau for Romundo, a city-state where androids live amongst men. Her partner is the android Iggy. The setup is pure Bladerunner… if Ril doesn’t start questioning her humanity by episode six, I’d be shocked."
I have watched episodes 1 to 4 and thus far I have to give it a huge thumbs up. High quality images with a deep story makes for an entertaining watch. It's a bit dark but the aesthetics really are beautiful to look at. It touches themes that gives you food for thought, you could actually even learn new things from the notes at the end of some of the episodes. Like some of the other reviews said if you have something that is a bit like GitS, Blade Runner, CSI, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, set in a cross genre of steampunk-post apocalypse-cyberpunk You really can't go that wrong. If you can, go watch it, but be ready for a serious anime that isn't afraid to delve deeper into the psyche.
